Stress Analysis of a Prosthetic Hand

Conducted a linear stress analysis of a model prosthetic hand made from ABS, under its maximum tensile load using Marc Mentat.

Upon finding an insufficient safety factor, a redesign needed to be made to reduce stress concentrations and improve durability. This was done using SolidWorks. Material was also removed in non-load bearing areas to save on material usage.

BeforeAfter

This project enhanced my computational Finite Element Analysis (FEA) skills, where I optimised mesh size, boundary conditions and rigid body elements to enhance accuracy without incurring excessive computational costs. The fatigue life was also determined using an S-N curve.
